For someone like me, that’s in the thick of the live cam industry and performing on cam with women all the time (check out my bio here) it can be easy to forget that not everyone knows that much about the live adult webcam industry.
In fact, I would guess if you were at a bar and asked a bunch of random people there “what’s a webcam model?”, How much money do they make? What do they actually do?” Most people would be struggling for an answer. Ask them what a stripper or hooker is and everyone knows.
So in the big picture, the live adult cam model industry is still in it’s infancy.

So what’s it like? I mean, we get to work from home and have sex all day…must be pretty awesome right? Well, yeah…mostly…I personally certainly can’t complain. I mean an average day for me is 6 hours of cam sex with beautiful women. But I’m a guy that gets to interact with different performers often. Most solo cam girls, it’s a very different story.
There is another side to this job that fans of cam girls can’t really comprehend. How would they? Or why would they want to?
The image they have in their head of what it’s like to be a cam girl suits them and their fantasy just fine.

I’m personal friends with many female cam models. There’s a real bubble in this industry.
The nature of the job, being your own boss and working from home can become a little overwhelming.
You tend to just socialize online, usually with people that do what you do or your fans that you’ve become friendly with.
Sometimes your family knows what you do, but most times they don’t. Sometimes they’re cool with it, proud of you even but sometimes you disgust them and they never want to see you again

Living a little bit of a life of secrecy is something a lot of cam models become experts in.
This can be a very lonely job.
One really interesting thing that I’ve noticed that I think would surprise most fans of cam models is, most cam models that I know are actually very shy in real life and have some sort of social anxiety.
And I think it’s a bit of a double edged sword.
A lot of girls get into this because they don’t want a “normal” job where they have to be around people. So this job is perfect for that. Because you don’t have to be around anyone ever…for days, weeks or even months on end. But of course that can take it’s toll on you too. Because as much as you hate being outside or around other people socially…us humans kinda need it.

The truth is, being a successful webcam model is really really hard

At the end of the day, this is business. And business is hard no matter what the industry or the amount of clothes you wear.
This industry is very competitive. One of the most common misconceptions I hear from both fans and new girls that are interested in working with me is that they think this job is sexy/easy. It actually is neither. Sorry to kill your boner. But the drop out rate in the porn/cam industry is really high. Most new performers don’t last more than a week. Why do you think that is? Coz it’s just too easy and they need more of a challenge? Nope. It’s because it’s difficult.
So any model that is sticking it out and making a living of this should be super proud.
It’s difficult building connections with guys and trying to get them to spend money on you instead of the 10,000’s of other models out there. It’s difficult sitting in front of a cam and trying to look happy when no one is talking to you. It’s difficult getting sick and not making any money for a couple of weeks coz you’re your own boss. It’s difficult knowing your livelyhood is all on you.

There’s a tendancy for models to become a little addicted to their job too. They might not be on cam “performing” all day but the job is hard to get away from. Editing videos, coming up with ideas for future shows…It all takes many hours. There’s a lot of work cam models do that fans don’t really understand.
Oh and Social Media! Social Media is addictive in general right? But imagine how addictive it can be if you’re interacting with your fans and you can actually make money while using it! It can be very overwhelming and time consuming. Almost impossible to get away from.
Another thing I don’t think guys realize is not all cam models make a butt load of money. Some do. But not all of them. A lot of them struggle. Again, this is business and some businesses make millions and some go broke.

So yes, this job is difficult and there is a side to it that most fans don’t understand. But, lets try and look for some positives too shall we? Because at the end of the day, models choose to do this job.
At the time of writing this I’ve worked with 44 girls on cam.

I’ve seen personally how with the right attitude and work ethic, being a webcam model can absolutely change your life.
I’ve worked with a 30yo girl in a mountain of debt, whose husband just screwed her over. She had nothing. I literally went to the bank with her where she was forced to cut up her credit card in front of the bank manager. Pretty crushing stuff.  When she met me, she was tossing up between escorting or camming. She chose camming and never looked back. Within 6 months this girl was making over $20,000 a month working both solo and with me and had completely turned her life around.

There’s also the young girls I’ve worked with that instead of having a mountain of debt for schooling use camming as a way to pay of their tuition. Or the moms that are so greatful for the freedom that this job provides and gives them an option to make great money while still being able to look after their kids.

The Live Cam industry gives you a great platform to be able to be your own boss, make amazing money and have a type of lifestyle most people would only dream about. But it is hard work that can overwhelm you if you let it.
I guess if there’s a point I’m trying to get across in this post it’s this:
Everyone needs balance in their life. Everyone needs time they can switch off and be a “normal” human. Time to enjoy with friends and family. In my opinion, being able to switch off and enjoy your life away from cam will make you a better performer on it.

Camming isn’t easy. No business is. But if you get into it with the right attitude and understand that it is hard work, you give yourself a much better chance for success.
